Pitch and Scale | Pt Ajoy Chakrabarty

There is a difference between pitch and scale, both in the context of Indian Classical Music and in how the human speech apparatus operates.

In Indian Classical Music-

  1. Pitch:

    1. Refers to the specific frequency of a sound or note, such as Sa (Shadja), which can be tuned to a particular frequency (e.g., 240 Hz).

    2. It is individual to each performance and singer, as artists choose their base pitch (tonic or fundamental note, often called Sa) according to their vocal range or comfort.

    3. Each note in the scale has a fixed relative position but can occur at different absolute frequencies depending on the tonic.

  2. Scale:

    1. Refers to the sequence of notes arranged in a specific order of intervals within an octave, forming the basis for a raga.

    2. For instance, a Bilawal scale (similar to the Western major scale) or Kafi scale (resembling the natural minor scale).

    3. A raga employs specific scales, ascending (Aaroh) and descending (Avroh), and defines rules about which notes can or cannot be used, emphasizing certain pitches.

Key Difference: While pitch is a single frequency, the scale is a pattern or framework within which these pitches are organized.

In the Use of the Speaking Apparatus-

  1. Pitch:

    1. Refers to the perceived highness or lowness of the voice, determined by the fundamental frequency of vocal fold vibrations.

    2. Affects the intonation and melody of speech, which helps convey meaning, emotion, or emphasis.

    3. For example, raising pitch can signal a question, while lowering it can indicate finality.

  2. Scale:

    1. While the term "scale" is not commonly used in speaking, the concept applies metaphorically to the range of pitches a person uses in speech.

    2. A person's vocal scale would depend on their physiology and habitual speaking habits, much like a singer's vocal range.

Key Difference: In speaking, pitch reflects momentary variations (intonation), while the scale could metaphorically represent the extent of those variations (highs and lows).

Intersection:

  1. In Indian classical music, both pitch and scale are deliberate and structured.

  2. In speech, pitch is more fluid and dynamic, while scales (or vocal range) are incidental and not bound by a formalized structure.
